So I kind of have been neglecting this blog as of late...I'm sorry but I cant help it.
It's the busiest season of the year for us at work (back to school) and I've been very shorthanded. I lost 2 full time people in the span of 2 weeks, right before back to school. GAH! Meghan was promoted and Jon has moved on to bigger and better things. So needless to say, I've been busy.
So what's new you ask? Well..
WE'RE HAVING A BOY!!'
yup, that's right. A little boy.
Bets were won and lost on that news. I think some of the guys are now owed lunch or something or other. I was never really biased towards either gender, I just had to know. All I wanted was a healthy baby and we got it. :) Although I think a boy might be a little easier in the long run. My mom wasn't as devastated as I thought she would be when I told her. I think she's just happy that there's an impending grandchild on the way.
Ok that's it for now. I need some sleep, another big day ahead of me. I promise when this whole busy season is over, I'll get to this blog a bit more. :S

and the Birthday weekend has come to an end...
Very different this year. Normally a birthday weekend would consist of a whole lotta drinking and dancing, this year... not so much. Not that I'm complaining at all, I mean it was a great week :)
Tuesday was dinner at my cousin Jen's house. Jen and I are only a few months apart and I find now that we are a bit older, we are so much alike. We have a lot of the same views on things and on life in general. Also joining us that night were my cousin Jaclyn, her brand new baby girl Rilee, Hon ha, her son and also Jen's nephew Damian and the hubby. Jen cooked us up an awesome meal and Hon Ha brought chocolate ice cream for dessert. It was a good time. Jason, Jen's husband joined us after he was done work and added some much needed testosterone to the estrogen party (poor Charlie). Rilee was passed out for most the night giving mommy a much needed adult break and Damian was such a good kid. He was so proud of the fact that he picked the ice cream that everyone was enjoying. It was such a good night, great food, great conversation and just an all around good night.
My actual birthday was on Wednesday and I spent it with my family. Just the way I wanted it.
I slept in a lot, a wonderful thing when your job consists of being on your feet all day. At about noon, I got up and headed to my parents place. They weren't home and my brother was still asleep (poor guy works midnights). So we did what any other kid at their mom's house would do... raided the fridge! Oh it was a good raid too! We ended up eating pizza pops and juice for lunch! Pizza pops are one of those things that we see at the grocery store and we know are just too awful for us so we never buy them. But magically at mom's house they suddenly become healthy and that will justify eating 2 of them. Still no one home and James still asleep so what did we do? Took a nap! About 2pm, my parents came home. My mom was all smiles to see us and then here come my dad with a huge bag of fabrics. He proudly dumped them all over the living room floor to show us. Apparently they got a huge deal on it all, I think they said something like $15 dollar for over 30m of fabric. I gotta admit there was some really cool stuff in there. Then the other surprise, my mom had plans to turn most of it into a maternity wardrobe for me! Did you know that she can take my old jeans with some stretch fabric and a bit of seamstress magic, she could turn them into maternity pants? I know, WOW! What a relief! My regular clothes are getting a bit tight and I was dreading having to buy maternity pants. My brother woke and and we finished our birthday extravaganza off with a visit to Buffet Square and Young's grocery. Such a nice day. Refreshing actually. I think now that I'm pregnant, I appreciate my family so much more.
Thursday was a just me and hubby birthday dinner. We decided to try out a new restaurant on Taylor called Carbone. I've been raving about it all week and always will. We got there and one the owners opened the doors for us and complimented Charlie on his Jets shirt(GO JETS GO). We were seated quickly and enjoyed every moment of our experience there. The food was fantastic, service was great and so inexpensive! So seriously, go there. It's amazing.
Friday was the ultrasound!!! We finally get to see baby! We got there early because the letter told us we should be and then waited over an hour just to get in. Totally worth it. We sat in the waiting room texting the ones we love with a simple question, Pink or Blue? We got a barrage or responses really quickly. So far it's Blue blue winning battle.
Charlie's mom is a doctor at the same hospital we were having the ultrasound so we invited her down to also be a viewer. They called my name and off I went. The tech introduced herself as Rishni ( I think) and we got down to business. We pretty much sat in silence for the 10-15 mins as she moved the probe around my tummy and press a bunch of keys...I had to break the ice:
"so, is everything looking ok?"
"oh yes, Im just taking pictures and measurements of the baby to make sure that it growing properly and that there are no abnormalities."
"oh, ok... so there's only one in there right?
"yes,*giggles a bit* only one"
"phew, well that's a relief"
...more silence.
"so can you tell the gender of the baby?"
"oh yes, it pretty obvious"
"...so, it's a ...."
"it will all be in the doctors report and she can tell you"
"GAH!!"
a few minutes later, she told me to wipe off the gel and empty my bladder, thank god because Ive been holding it for 3 hours now! I walked back in and she finished up her pictures and went out into the hall to invite Charlie and Esther in. She showed us a side profile of the baby, a leg and an arm... we could also see the heart beating and the baby moving...alot!
So cool, it makes it that much more real now and the perfect birthday present to myself. There really is a little person growing in there!!!
HOLY CRAP!
So after all that I had to go to work! It's tax day and I know it's gonna be a busy one.
Saturday was pretty chill. Worked all day and had the traditional family dinner with the Herscovitch's. Dim Sum, yum yum!
Sunday was a great day too:) Myrna's breakfast/lunch with the hubby and Ron followed by a Home Depot run. Charlie helped Ron finish up a light table and I took a nap because the "itis" that Myrna's gave me. After I woke up from my nap, It was my official birthday dinner with the in-laws at where else? My favorite restaurant of the moment, Carbone.
and that's a wrap for the weekend :)
at 19 weeks and 5 days, almost halfway there :)

The luck of the Buddah...
We received our first baby gift this week, a beautiful baby sized jade Buddha straight from Vietnam.
![]() |
(it looks similar to this but ours is much nicer ) |
Thank you Michael, it's very much appreciated and we absolutely love it.
Micheal is one my work family. He just spent the last 3 weeks in Vietnam visiting family and living it up! Good for him :). Before he left he asked if there was anything he could bring back for any of us. I asked for the Buddah. In most Asian cultures, it's a sign of luck and I figured we could use it... well, I think it's working. Why you ask? Well, I think our luck is changing for the better.
Like I'm sure most new soon-to-be parents do, we were freaking out a bit about finances. That being said, Charlie decided to try and find another part time job. This week he got a call from our friend Roger saying that he could use a hand at the Mobile Truck Wash that he works at (one of Roger's 3 jobs, that kid works so hard!). So of course Charlie jumped at the chance. He started bright and early on Tuesday. It's a physically demanding job but he likes it. He says it's good to be outside, a great workout and it's decent money. It ends up being part time days and he can work as much or as little as he wants. It's perfect. Between this job and the websites, we no longer have any money worries. It's such a relief. We even plan on starting up a RESP and a savings account for baby.
This week was about reclaiming some faith...
Faith that things will always work out if your patient enough.
Faith that the people that love you most will always be there for you.
Faith that karma does exist.
We find out whether to buy pink or blue next Friday...

Cravings..
They have started.
So far they weren't anything strange.... until today that is.
I was finishing a huge plate of perogies off and a thought came to my mind... You know what would be great with these perogies? PICKLES!
Wow.. Pregnant much?
True story.
So far the cravings have just been for gelati (something about really cold fruity things) and apparently a really intense one for lasagna. One so intense that Charlie had to drive me to Sbarro in the mall asap or he was afraid I was going to rip his head off... I did apologize for that later, after I had lasagna. :)
LOL
and this ride isn't even half done yet. Wish my husband luck!

Butterflies, tears, reunions and red velvet cake...
That, in a nutshell summarizes today. It was a wonderful day, our good friends Marj and Scott got married today and it was beautiful.
They are probably one of the most perfect couples I know. They are both teachers, come from wonderful families and are just genuinely fantastic people. The ceremony was perfect, so heartfelt and meaningful. It was outside on the grounds at the St Boniface Golf club. All week it had called for rain and thundershowers today but this afternoon it was partly cloudy and a perfect temperature. Funny enough while they were in the middle of their vows about 6 white butterflies starting fluttering about all the guests. It was so movie-esque. And yes, I cried. I really couldn't help myself, Marj started crying half down the isle and I lost it. But happy tears... Very happy tears :)
Let me give you a bit of background here...Marj and I met what feels like a million years ago. I actually hired Marj back at American Eagle. Back then we had such a good staff, many of them were there tonight. Seema, Shauna, Vanessa, Dutka, Cetaidel, Randall and Adam... Such good kids. I call them kids now and I always will because even though they are all very successful in their chosen professions I'll always think of them as high school/university students. We all came together at a perfect time. We were all in a finding-out-who-we-are-mode so we all grew together. One thing we all had in common was our love of food. It didn't matter if it was a bag of chips or a full on dinner we were always up for sharing. From there we all just grew up. Its funny, even if we don't see each for months, sometimes years it seems like we just saw each other the day before and we just pick where we left off.
Its amazing to see them all now. They have all grown up so well and I'm so proud of each and everyone of them. They are the people that I know I will have in my life for a long time and Im honored to have them as friends. They are also gonna be the best aunties and uncles... A lot of them found out about baby today :)
I know baby can already feel the love from them. Seema just HAD to have a picture of her kissing my bump. I love that girl. Sweet as ever.
Oh and the red velvet cake you ask? Well that was Marj and Scott's wedding cake! SO good! I knew Marj would have good dessert, it just wouldn't be Marj's wedding if there wasn't good food, friends and dessert :)
Congrats Marj and Scott!
Have a fantastic time in Europe and we'll do a Carlos and Murphys run when you get back. Much love to you both!

heartbeat!
So today we had another appointment with ever so lovely Dr. Vivian Lee. Everything seems to be going quite well! My weight gain is good, no high blood pressure, results from the last blood test were awesome and then she pulls out the speaker stethoscope...
She squirts a gel on to my tummy and presses on part of it to my lower tummy. She moves it around a bit before there it was...
thump thump thump thump thump...
It was going so quickly, apparently that's normal. Charlie sat completely quiet in the corner with the biggest smile I've ever seen. Dr. Lee wipes off the gel and I joke
"so there's only one in there, right?"
"well for now... but we wont know for sure until the ultrasound"
*phew*... for now.
a heartbeat huh?
So this kid is really for real. It kinda gives you a kick of reality. There's a baby there! Holy Crap! We see Dr. Lee again on the 19th, two days after my 32nd birthday. That's ultra sound day!
The 19th is hopefully when we figure out whether this baby is a boy or a girl! Yay! My mother is convinced that its a girl. She had a dream and she was playing with a little girl. So it HAS to be a girl, no matter what. There has been a pretty even divide in the predictions. Many of the work kids says boy, but my mom, Meg and a few other people close to me say girl. I don't know as long as it's healthy :)

17 weeks...
I am officially 17 weeks today. Time seems to be flying by.
I've definitely started to notice this baby bump. It's getting harder and sticks out a lot more and it all seemed to have happened this past week. I have not given in to maternity pants yet, I just bought jeans in a bigger size. I know i'll get there eventually but for now it's the old navy sale rack for this chickie :) I think I only see the tips of my shoes now and speaking of shoes, It's getting harder to tie them up without this kid having something to say about it.
I've also noticed that it does NOT like flying and quick changes in altitude. Montreal is an island with a big mountain in the middle. Driving up and down steep hills was not agreeing with baby. Every time we dropped it felt like baby was kicking me in the throat and then my bladder. This kid is a true prairie kid. Flat plains only please.
Im starting to feel alot of "quickening" which is basically the baby's way of telling me that its getting ready to kick! If you press on my belly you can feel pulsing, digesting and blood pumping to the baby...weird. And now the cravings have officially kicked in. Apparently I had a very intense lasagna craving and now I want gelati.
So that where I leave it tonight, dragging the husband out so I can get gelati. :)

There's no place like home...
Hometown Glory-Adele
Back to Winnipeg it is! After a long weekend in Montreal, I'm so happy to be back. That saying of "there's no place like home" really is very true. As much as I love Montreal, I can only tolerate for short periods of time.
Things I love about Montreal:
-24hr wood-fired bagel joints
-the Orange Julep
-the Montreal Biodome
-the Botanical gardens
-Walking old Montreal
-Atwater Market
-Jason Hamlin (we miss you buddy)
-Gina Ravinsky (for a lady in her 80's, you got more pep than I do)
-St Hubert's Quarter chicken meal and sauce
-Harmonie Bakery and Chinatown in general.
Things I loathe about Montreal:
-gridlocked traffic
-Montreal drivers
-Crumbling Freeways
-Obvious Materialism
-The unforgiving nature of strictly French people
Obviously there are more pros than cons and that's what keeps me going back. This past trip was far from a vacation. Everything was so packed in to such a small amount of time and there was no stops in between.
Next time I hope we get a bit more free time to explore the town. Just wander the streets with no agenda and no time constraints...
J'aime et je te hais de Montréal ... et je serai de retour (I love and hate you montreal... and I will be back)
